Cuzco vase, 'Moche Warrior and Dog'
A unique record of the past, this vase features a valiant Moche warrior practicing warfare maneuvers while dressed in animal stylizations, including long regal wings. A dog trains alongside him, also attired for war, as it is thought dogs were once used in battle. Dionisio Rojas pays tribute to the great Moche soldiers through his ceramic art which replicates pre-Hispanic artistry in form and technique. Rojas assumes the responsibility to preserve pre-Hispanic memory through his ceramic art and presents this decorative vase as testimonial to Peru's past. Rojas hand-paints elaborate motifs of pre-Hispanic inspiration before applying varnish for a rich and protective luster. He signs each of his pieces, making each one a unique sample of Peru's ceramic artistry.
